Preserving the Shaker Parklands:
The Story of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes
It is with gratitude and excitement that we present the publication of Preserving the Shaker Parklands: The Story of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. Board member and author, Lauren Pacini, along with Laura Peskin dedicated countless hours to the production of this full color coffee table book celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Nature Center.
The book beautifully tells the story of the grassroots community effort that halted the Clark and Lee Freeways that would have destroyed the Shaker Parklands and the surrounding homes, businesses and parks. It is a story of bipartisan efforts by the residents of Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights who united to build the Nature Center at the heart of the former North Union Settlement.
Today, the Nature Center is a national leader among nature centers, enriching lives through education, innovative programs, and community involvement. Thousands of students visit the Nature Center each year. For many, these visits are their first experience in nature. With vintage and contemporary photography, as well as historical data, letters and clippings, the story is told by combining the authors' narrative with the personal stories of those involved in the founding and evolution of the Nature Center.
The book will launch at Party in the Parklands and will be available in the Nature Center's gift shop and local bookshops. To learn more or to purchase your copy online, please visit www.artographypress.com.
