40 Ways to Help the Nature Center

1. Spread the word! Talk about the Nature Center with those who don't know about it.

2. Join in weekly Nature Hikes and learn about native plant and animal life and the history of the Shaker Lakes Parklands.

3. Enroll your child in our Outdoor Adventure Classes where they can become junior naturalists.

4. Keep up-to-date on environmental issues facing our world by participating in the monthly Environmental Town Hall discussions.

5. Capture lasting images of all the beauty of nature by joining the Nature Center Photography Club.

6. Exercise, enjoy the outdoors and learn about the parklands by joining the Shaker Lakes Runners.

7. Volunteer at one of many special events, in the offices or with land management projects.

8. Join in the annual Hike for the Jenny Fund to raise money to provide education and experiences in nature to underserved children.

9. Show your commitment to the environment and to your community - become a member of the Nature Center or renew your membership.

10. Shop a wide selection of unique gifts at the Nature Center's Duck Pond Gift Store.

11. Rent the Nature Center for your next party, company event or presentation.

12. Attend the biannual family Bug Bash benefit to help raise money for early childhood education at the Nature Center.

13. Donate an auction item to one of our benefits.

14. Show your appreciation of your planet at the Nature Center's annual Celebrate the Earth festivities.

15. Buy Richard Louv's book, "Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder," at the Duck Pond, and learn more about engaging future generations with the environment.

16. Cut your water bills and support the Nature Center by making your own rain barrel at one of our workshops.

17. Give generously to the Annual Nature Fund and encourage your employer to match your gift.

18. Become a land management volunteer to join the fight against invasive plant species at the Nature Center.

19. Help with land management projects by attending Stewardship Saturdays, every Saturday morning, and bring friends, family members and groups.

20. Find out how to turn a pesky invasive species into a delicious pesto dish at the annual Garlic Mustard Pestival.

21. Visit the exhibit area to learn more about the Shaker Lakes and the Doan Brook.

22. Beautify your own home and support the Nature Center by taking part in our annual plant sale.

23. Learn how to make your yard Healthy for Humans and Habitats with the Laudable Lawn and Home Habitat program.

24. Drop off newspapers and magazines in the recycling bins in the Nature Center's parking lot.

25. Give a gift to the Endowment Foundation by making a donation to the Nature Center in honor of or in memory of someone special.

26. Attend the Oct. 20 B'Earthday Bash in celebration of the Nature Center's 40th year.

27. Give a Nature Center gift membership to a friend or relative.

28. Relax in the Murphy Carfagna Wildlife Balcony: watch the birds (and squirrels) visiting the feeders.

29. Become a docent and assist in children's classes or lead a hike.

30. Take your children (or parents) on a walk on the Stearns Trail and learn about local wildlife firsthand.

31. Unwind on the Jenny Goldman Memorial Bench on the Stearns Trail and enjoy nature with a loved one.

32. Visit the Nature Center's facilities and learn more about Green Building and how you can turn your home into a Green Building.

33. Encourage your work, religious institutions and neighbors to go Green.

34. Think globally, act locally! Get on the Nature Center's mailing list and email list to learn more about adult education programs.

35. Become a member of the Evergreen Society by remembering the Nature Center in your will.

36. Nominate your favorite and most deserving Nature Center volunteer for Volunteer of the Year.

37. Make a donation of $1,000 and become a Heron, $2,500 and become a Green Heron,  $5,000 and become a Blue Heron or $10,000 and become a Great Blue Heron.

38. Encourage your child's school to plan field trips to the Nature Center.

39. Spend time in the trees by visiting the Jean Eakin Bird Observation Station.
